History of Keen


1919 - Stanley Keen opened Keen Auto Parts
 
     
1925 - Keen Auto parts expanded by
purchasing 2 city blocks
   
1928 - Introduced gases into the business selling Acetylene and Oxygen cylinders
 
   
1934 - Further expansion into the
welding supply business
   
1939 - Expanded into Lower Delaware
 
   
  1943 - Started in the Propane Business
   

1946 - Keen incorporated under the name
Keen Compressed Gas Co., Inc

- First Propane Truck is acquired

 
   
  1948 - Stocked only 1 AC and 1 DC welder
and 5 gas types
   
1952 - Fire - Market Street Burned Out
 
   
  1953 - Moved to new location at 4305 Miller Road - business prospered through the 60's
   
1957 - Willard Keen, Sr. became 2nd President
 
   
  1962 - Willard Keen, Sr. Passed Away
   

1965 - Stanley H. Keen Passed Away

- J. Merrill Keen became 3rd President

 
   
 

1966 - 1st Branch Location (Salisbury, MD)

- Hobart Welders Sales & Service Acquisition
(Dover - Voshell Bros)

   
1967 - Keen Welding Supply (separated)
   
   
  1969 - Acquired Anchor Welding Supply and
began Gas Distributorship with Airco
   
1972 - Purchased New Castle Avenue
property which now houses our
largest store, cylinder fill facillities
and Welding School Building
 
   
  1973 - Installed first computer system
   
1974 - Opened Dover Branch Store and continued expansions by opening 9
additional stores in the next 20 years
 
   
  1984 - Expanded Medical / Specialty Gas Division - business boomed through the 80's
   
1985 - Instituted Welder Training Schools
 
   
 

1990 - Expansion continued - acquired Interstate Oxygen and opened Branch Stores in Oxford, PA and Salisbury, MD

- Jon Keen & Bryan Keen became Vice Presidents of the Company

   
1998 - Sold Bulk Propane Portion
of Company to Heritage Propane
 
   
 

2000 - Purchased 11th Branch Store in Coatesville, PA

- Bryan Keen became 4th President

   
2001 - Purchased First Nitrogen
Micro bulk delivery vehicle
 
   
  2005 - Purchased property in Baltimore and opened 12th Branch location
   
2006 - Purchased TecCon in Darby, Pa,
13th Branch location & Lanco in
New Holland, PA
14th Branch
 
   
  2009 - We have 14 Stores and over 2
million dollars in inventory in the 4-state
area of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland
and New Jersey
